Can You…

Can you close your eyes?
If it’s the last time before you die?

Can you make a legal bind?
The one that no one can find?

Can you write?
Even if it stays out of sight?

Can you brace the day of light?
Or will you stay to duel the night?

Can you save a life?
Without it being your wife?

Can you kill someone?
Without a loaded gun?

Can you trust people?
Even if friendships are lethal?

Can you bury your past?
Or would you make amends?

Can you drink a beer?
Without shedding a single tear?

Can you be the savor?
Or just be caught in hard labour?

Can you change?
Or is sight out of range?

It seems like each one of the rhyming couplets could be expanded into a separate poem. I especially like:

    Can you write?
Even if it stays out of sight?

This question could also apply to other forms of art (not just writing). There are many reasons to do art: to express yourself, to communicate an idea, to connect to others, to make something beautiful or just to have fun. It’s different for everyone and different for each person at different times of their lives.

I once saw a Canadian interviewer do a ‘man on the street’ segment with an oriental woman whom he had met on a tree-lined street in the Vancouver area. She was middle aged and very shy. She was carrying a sketch pad and he asked her if he could see her drawings. She was hesitant at first but complied. The cameraman zoomed in on her sketch pad and she flipped the pages to reveal the drawings she had done that afternoon of the trees and their blossoms. They were amazingly beautiful. What was even more amazing (to me) was that over the years, she had only ever shown her drawings to one person: her husband.
